Have a Nice Day?

In American English, use of the word nice is very common. It’s an all-purpose word meaning pleasant, agreeable, satisfactory: It is nice weather. She always says such nice things. He has a nice job. She has a nice personality. His toupee looks nice. I have a nice boss. Because nice is so overused, it lacks freshness, personality, and importance. It is weak.

I try to avoid saying nice but, sometimes, when I’m speaking informally (or feeling lazy), I hear myself say it and then feel guilty about being so unoriginal. I often do better than that....and so can you.

It is gorgeous weather. She always says such complimentary things. He has a rewarding job. She has a cheerful personality. His toupee looks natural. I have a supportive boss.
