Purpose adverbs answer "Why?"

Monday, November 19, 2012

Adverbs are words that describe (modify) verbs, adjectives, and other adverbs. They can be single words, such as slowly, yesterday, anywhere but they also can be phrases. Today's post focuses on purpose adverbs which answer the question, "Why?" Some purpose adverbs can be made with prepositions, others with infinitives:

Mattia plays the guitar for fun.
Nat takes the stairs instead of the elevator for exercise.
Angelo made dinner for his girlfriend's birthday.

I wear gloves to warm my hands.
Martina called a plumber to fix her sink.
Fabio wears sunglasses to protect his eyes.
