Vocabulary hog

Monday, September 30, 2013

A hog is a large pig, usually weighing more than 120 pounds (54 kg). It is a noun. We can also call people hogs. In that case, a hog is a self-indulgent, gluttonous, or filthy person. It's not very complimentary or flattering, is it?.

Today's post also introduces the verb, hog, which means to keep or use all of (something) for oneself in an unfair or selfish way. It's an informal way to express when someone monopolizes, controls, or dominates. Here's how to use hog in your everyday speaking:

- Rocco takes long showers and hogs all of the hot water.

- Steven always hogs the sofa when he watches TV.

- Don't hog all of the potato chips. Save some for me.

People hog things that can be seen or touched, but intangible things can also be hogged, like attention or time.

Are you guilty of hogging anything?
