The United States is big, and unless you live in a city center you really need a car to get anywhere. The distances are great and it sometimes feels like you live in your car. Because of this, we like our comforts while driving, so one standard feature many drivers now consider necessary is a cup holder, and the more the better.
Americans drink a lot of beverages (we like our free refills) and there is always someone walking around carrying a cup from Starbucks, a bottled water, a Coca Cola, or some other liquid refreshment. Well, when we get to our car, we need a place for these drinks, so the design of a car’s interior must include cup holders.
This American expectation has changed the interior design of automobiles...and other things (my cart at the grocery store has cup holders)...over the last thirty years and it can be one of the main selling points of a car in some cases. Cup holders have benefits for many people and the designs are becoming increasingly sophisticated.
Honestly, I don’t know what all the fuss is about. I don’t drink a lot of beverages and I never use the cup holders in my car. I’m a rare case. I suppose I could use them for something else, like miniature garbage cans.
