One more thing to say about lay and lie: LAID

Monday, August 9, 2010

If you recall from my post on July 25, lay in the present tense is a transitive verb = to place something down. Its past tense form is laid.

  • I laid your iPad on the table.
  • He laid the bowling ball on my foot.
  • The hen laid an egg.
  • She laid the baby in his crib.
  • lay; laid (transitive verb) = to place something down
  • lie; lay (intrasitive verb) = to recline; to rest on a surface
