Super Sunday-Super Bowl!

Thursday, February 3, 2011

This Sunday, February 6, is Super Bowl Sunday, the biggest American football match of the year. It’s the championship game of the National Football League (NFL), which is the highest level of professional football in the United States. I’m particularly excited this year because my state’s team, the Green Bay Packers, will battle against the Pittsburgh Steelers for the coveted Vince Lombardi Trophy. The winning team receives the Vince Lombardi Trophy, named after the legendary coach of the Green Bay Packers who won the first two Super Bowl games.

Although it’s not an official holiday, the excitement this game brings to the nation is quite a spectacle. It’s a combination of the sporting event and entertainment, and it’s considered the most watched television broadcast. Because of this, the cost of airing a commercial is the most expensive of the year, with advertisers creating special ads just for this occasion. People love watching these commercials, which are always really funny. In addition, many popular musicians perform during the event's pre-game and halftime ceremonies. Past performers have been Bruce Springsteen, The Who, The Rolling Stones, Michael Jackson, and this year it’s The Black Eyed Peas.

A spectacular Super Bowl ring is awarded to each player on the winning team. Since only one Vince Lombardi Trophy is awarded to the team itself, the Super Bowl ring offers a collectible memento for the actual players and team members to keep for themselves to symbolize the victory. Many rings feature diamonds and gold in the shape of the Vince Lombardi Trophy, a football, or the team logo. Also, the rings are customized with the player's name and uniform number.

All of Wisconsin (and most of the nation) will be in front of their TVs and I’m hoping for a Green Bay Packers victory!
